In an effort to raise awareness for colorectal cancer screenings, the nonprofit 21st Century C.A.R.E. foundation is hosting the 6th Annual Scope for Hope 5K run, 2-Mile Walk and Kid’s Fun Run. The event will take place Saturday, March 12, 2016 at CenturyLink Sports Complex at Hammond Stadium, 14100 Six Mile Cypress Parkway in Fort Myers.
Registration begins at 7 a.m., followed by the 5K at 8 a.m. The two-mile walk will begin at 8:05 a.m., and the Kid’s Fun Run will begin at 9:15 a.m. All proceeds raised from the Scope for Hope 5K will benefit the nonprofit 21st Century C.A.R.E. and will be used for colorectal cancer education, screening and treatment in Southwest Florida.
This year, pop singer Tarralyn Ramsey will be joining the event. She has had a very successful career to date, with albums charting on Billboard pop charts. She has shared the stage with juggernauts of the music industry, including Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder and Beyoncé. Ramsey will be writing and debuting a song just for Scope for Hope, and she will be singing the Star Spangled Banner to kickoff the event.
Excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, over 130,000 new cases of colon and rectal cancers will be diagnosed this year, resulting in over 49,000 deaths. However, due to increased screening rates, the death rate has been dropping. Regular colonoscopies can detect polyps that could develop into cancer. As a result, there are over one million survivors of colorectal cancer in the United States.
The pre-registration fee is $30 for adults and $15 for youth 17 and under through February 28. Registration from March 1 through March 11 is $35 for adults and $20 for youth. Race day registration fee is $40 for all ages.
Awards will be presented to top three male and female finishers in each category. All participants in the Kid’s Fun Run will receive a ribbon. The first 300 participants registered will receive a gift bag with a race t-shirt and other gifts. Refreshments and a continental breakfast will be available.
