Cohen Announces Candidacy For Reelection To Lee Health Board

(Lee County, FL) – Sanford “Sandy” Cohen, M.D., is running for reelection to the Lee Health Board of Directors-District 3, a position he’s held for eight years.

Since being elected in 2012, Dr. Cohen’s tenure on the Lee Health Board has included three years as its Chair and a year as Co-Chair. His healthcare leadership also includes service as Chair of the Advisory Committee to the Dean of the Marieb College of Health & Human Services at Florida Gulf Coast University, and as the Region 4 Planning Board Member of the American Hospital Association. In 2019, Dr. Cohen was named “Trustee of the Year” by the Florida Hospital Association.

Dr. Cohen’s vision and follow-through as a member of the Lee Health Board have led to major healthcare improvements for all Lee County residents, including hiring of Dr. Larry Antonucci as CEO & President of Lee Health, the founding of Golisano Children’s Hospital, expansion of Gulf Coast Medical Center, launch of the Lee Health Center at Coconut Point, establishment of a new regional pediatric ambulatory care center in North Naples, and additions of walk-in clinics in Cape Coral and at Metro Parkway.

Dr. Cohen has dedicated his life to helping people be well: as a Johns Hopkins University trained pediatrician, captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, educator and research university provost, hospital administrator, and urban police commissioner. Dr. Cohen is a 23-year resident of Lee County.

“I am pleased to announce my candidacy for Lee Health Board,” said Dr. Cohen. “Your vote to reelect me will ensure that the successes of the Lee Health Board continue, and that important initiatives I’ve proposed become reality.”

Should he be reelected in the November 3rd general election, Dr. Cohen plans to focus on instilling mental/behavioral health programs as a bedrock of ambulatory care, supporting the health system’s shift from volume-based care to value-based performance, improving access to care for all Lee County residents, and safeguarding the operational sustainability of Lee Health.
