Florida on Thursday morning reported a total of 22,897 cases of the new coronavirus and 633 deaths since the outbreak began. Broward County has had 101 deaths, up nine from the previous day and reaching a new milestone. But less than 1,000 new cases of the new coronavirus have been counted in each of the past two days, the first time that has happened since March 30-31. Miami-Dade, the epicenter for infections in Florida, has had 163 deaths and 8,131 cases. With 2.7 million people, Miami-Dade has the highest population of all 67 counties in the state, according to the most recent census data. There have been 110 deaths and 1,841 cases in Palm Beach County and 3,459 cases in Broward, the Department of Health said. The United States counted 640,014 cases by late Thursday morning, including 31,002 deaths. Both figures are the highest among all countries with the virus; the U.S. is the third most populous country, behind China and India. Florida’s weekly jobless claims spiked again by 181,293 as big companies continued to lay off large chunks of their workforces, according to figures released Thursday. But many of the newly unemployed again struggled to file with the state’s failed benefit claims system, raising the likelihood the number could have been higher. | Read more .
