( WEAR ) — Florida will now allow food trucks to operate at select rest stops, after a Channel 3 investigation found that the state was behind on a national effort to keep truckers fed and on schedule during this coronavirus pandemic. A move from the National Highway Administration allows food trucks to open shop at rest areas across the country. This comes as truckers find it more difficult to find food as almost all restaurants are either shutdown or take-out only. Senator Doug Broxson tells Channel 3 he found that Florida was not permitting such food truck operations despite the national effort — and that came as a surprise to him. Broxson says starting Wednesday, Florida will now be welcoming food truck support from Pensacola to Tallahassee, and he expects soon it will be statewide. “I think it’s just common sense and I’m surprised it wasn’t done before,” he said, “and again, I want to thank you for bringing it to my attention so that we could act on it immediately. I can tell you it went straight to the secretary’s office and my guess is your action today will cause this to be the policy from Pensacola to Key West.” Like many states, it will only be at select rest stops, but which ones have yet to be determined, according to Broxson.
