From yard signs to lighting up the sky, see how Florida is honoring high school seniors

May 4 starts off Teacher Appreciation Week with a Light up the Night Sky at 8:15pm. Families in Brevard were encouraged to shine lights outside. Florida Today Florida’s high school seniors won’t see the inside of their classrooms again before graduation. Most won’t have proms or traditional graduation ceremonies. Spring sports seasons are cancelled. For this group of young people, the coronavirus pandemic has robbed them of what would have been among their most precious memories. In a blog post later published by the USA TODAY Network, Barron Collier High School senior Becca Pacter wrote, “I wish we would’ve known this was going to happen. I would have said my last good-byes to teachers, given some hugs to friends, and made the most out of the time being while I had it.” But this year’s seniors haven’t been forgotten. Friends, family and community members are finding ways to support and honor the Class of 2020, even while the state-mandated quarantines have kept most isolated at home. Here’s a look at a few ways Florida is honoring its high school seniors. 1. In Palm Beach County, teachers and staff from Wellington High School placed signs honoring seniors outside the students’ homes. “It’s just a simple way to celebrate our seniors … and it seemed to go a long way,” Principal Cara Hayden said. “It’s all we can do right now.” To make sure the signs were in compliance with the village’s code, Wellington Village Manager Paul Schofield signed an executive order […]
