Southwest, Fla., Feb. 15, 2019 – Next month’s roster of activities at Lakes Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adult Programs

 

English Café

6 p.m. Mondays, March 4, 11, 25

Free, informal conversation sessions for adult ESOL/ESL students.

Irish Voices

2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5

Actor Stephen Collins stars in this one-man performance of work by prominent Irish writers, such as Yeats, Joyce, Heaney, McCourt and others. Registration is required.

Coloring for Adults

2 p.m. Tuesdays, March 12, 26

Come and experience the latest trend in relaxation, adult coloring books. Studies show coloring can have a calming effect on the adult mind and helps promote overall wellness. Coloring pages designed especially for adults, as well as colored pencils, will be provided. Registration is required.

Book Discussion: “In the Hurricane’s Eye” by Nathaniel Philbrick

2 p.m. Wednesday, March 13

Philbrick’s riveting narrative, full of dramatic and unexpected turns, reveals that the fate of the American Revolution depended, in the end, on Washington and the sea. Registration is required.

2 p.m. Wednesday, March 20

Did you know you can download books, magazines, music and other library content from our online library? Bring your app-enabled, fully charged e-reader or tablet, and we will show you how to use Libby, Hoopla and other library apps. This is a drop-in program. No registration is required.

David Kilbride Sings Old Favorites

2 p.m. Thursday, March 21

Guitarist David Kilbride plays and sings favorites from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Registration is required.

Who Made the Everglades?

2 p.m. Tuesday, March 26

This talk will explore the geological and cultural history of the Everglades. In particular, we will look at the role of early Native Americans and initial tree island formations. Presented by FPAN. Registration is required.

Master Gardeners: Container Gardening

2 p.m. Thursday, March 28

Learn how you can grow your own single plant or garden, ornamental or edible, in containers, on a back porch, lanai or windowsill. Some hands-on experience will be available for those who wish to participate. Registration is required.

 

 

Storytime

 

Baby Rhyme Time

10 a.m. Monday, March 25

For babies up to 18 months. Please pick up a storytime ticket at the Youth Services desk the morning of the program. Space is limited. During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance.

Toddler Tales

11 a.m. Monday, March 25

For ages 18 to 36 months. Please pick up a storytime ticket at the Youth Services desk the morning of the program. Space is limited. This interactive and active time for toddlers and their caregiver is designed to advance prereading and social skills. They’ll experience storytelling, wordplay, felt board stories, fingerplays, puppets, singing, music making, socializing, dancing and, of course, books.

Family Storytime

10 a.m. Wednesday, March 27

For children up to age 5. Please pick up a storytime ticket at the Youth Services desk the morning of the program. Space is limited. Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of prereading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.

Preschool Storytime

11 a.m. Wednesday, March 27

For ages 3 – 5. Please pick up a storytime ticket at the Youth Services desk the morning of the program. Space is limited. Your preschooler will continue to build relationships with other kids, books, and the library in a storytime designed specifically for them.

After School Crew: Florida

4 p.m. Wednesdays, March 6, 13, 20, 27

Weekly stories and activities with a focus on Florida. Sponsored by the Friends of Lakes Regional Library. For grades K-5.

Books and More

4 p.m. Thursday, March 7

Join us for a story plus more. We will explore a book and then do something more – a project to get our creative juices flowing. Dress for mess. Sponsored by the Friends of Lakes Regional Library. For ages 2-12. Registration begins Feb. 14.

 

Special Needs Storytime

10 a.m. Saturday, March 9

Books, music and sensory experiences for children ages 3-12 with special needs and their families. Registration begins Feb. 16.

Get Off the Couch Games

4 p.m. Monday, March 11

Get off the couch and drop in for some crazy games. Sponsored by the Friends of Lakes Regional Library. For ages 2-12.

Lego Kids

4 p.m. Tuesday, March 12

Explore engineering and math with Lego bricks. All materials supplied. For grades K-5. Space is limited. Registration begins Feb. 19.

Preschool Play Dough Fun

10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 13

Preschoolers, join us at the library for some Play-Doh fun. Get creative with our Play-Doh Fun Factories or explore your letters, shapes and numbers formed with Play-Doh. For ages 2 – 5. Sponsored by the Friends of Lakes Regional Library. Registration begins Feb. 20.

Kids Read Down Fines

2 – 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16

Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading during the allotted time in the designated area of the library. Coupons may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only, and applies only to charges on overdue materials.

Osmo Mania

11 a.m., 2 p.m. & 4 p.m.

Monday, March 18 & Tuesday, March 19

Join us as we explore, learn and create with Osmo tech toys. For children age five and up. Sponsored by the Friends of Lakes Regional Library. Registration begins Feb. 25. Participants can register for one session.

Paw Patrol Party

10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 20

Preschoolers, join Ryder and the PAW Patrol gang as we work together on missions to protect Adventure Bay. For ages 2 – 5. Sponsored by the Friends of Lakes Regional Library. Registration begins Feb. 27.

Preschool Block Party

10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 26

Come play and create with us at our block party. Join us as we have fun letting our imaginations lead us in some serious play. Sponsored by the Friends of Lakes Regional Library. For ages 2 – 5. Registration begins March 5.

Homeschool Exploration: Architecture

10 a.m. Thursday, March 28

Homeschoolers, join us for hands-on activities and games featuring architecture from around the world. For children 5 years and up. Sponsored by the Friends of Lakes Regional Library. Registration begins March 7.

Teen Tech Day

4 – 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 6

Celebrate Teen Tech Week with our Sphero+ robots and Super Nintendo games. Drop-in to program, play and have loads of fun. All supplies and games will be provided.

Make an Impact: Earn Service Hours at Your Library

2 – 4 p.m. Saturday, March 23

Get creative. Have fun. Make an impact in your community and earn service hours in the process. Help us put a smile on someone’s face when you jazz up some plain brown paper grocery bags to donate to the Gladiolus Food Pantry. For grades 6-12. All supplies will be provided. Sponsored by the Friends of the Lakes Regional Library.
