Summer is quickly approaching and for most of us that means the house is closed up and the air conditioner is on full blast. With the hot months coming, is your air conditioner ready? We have a few tips for you to keep your air conditioner up and running.

  1. Change your filters. It is so important to keep all of your filters clean so that the air can flow through unobstructed. Not checking and/or changing your filters once a month can lead to your air conditioner shutting down. This is especially important if you have pets in the home as the hair tends to clog up the filters pretty quickly.
  2. Change the batteries in your thermostat. We recommend that you take the batteries out and let the thermostat sit for at least 15 minutes before putting new batteries back in.
  3. Make sure your outside air conditioning unit (condenser) is unobstructed by tall landscaping. Anything that hinders the ability of the condenser to have air flow can potentially cause an issue with the performance of your air conditioner. As a general rule of thumb, keep any shrubs and plant life a minimum of 2-3 feet away from the condenser.
  4. If you are more on the handy side and have access to a wet/dry vacuum, you can clear out your drain line. Put your wet/dry vacuum at the end of the drain line outside and let it run until you hear the drain line clear. When the a/c runs as much as it does in the summer months, more liquid is produced and the tendency for it to coagulate and clog your drain line is pretty high, even if your a/c is brand new. Many of our calls in the summer time are exactly this; the drain line is clogged and your a/c shuts down.
  5. If you are unable to do any of these items or you just don’t want to, no worries, we have you covered! You can schedule a maintenance with us and we will go through and clean your coil, change your filters and clear your drain line. Even better, you can sign up for one of our maintenance contracts and we can check and clean your air conditioner twice a year at a discounted rate.
