The Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District is proud to announce the establishment of a new local chapter of Project Fire Buddies (PFB), a nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children facing critical illnesses and their families through meaningful connections with fire departments and first responders.
Project Fire Buddies partners with fire departments nationwide to bring joy, hope, and relief to children with serious illnesses and their families. Their approach includes meaningful visits, gifts, special experiences, and the forging of ongoing relationships between the children, their families, and their local fire-rescue personnel. Each child referred to the program is reviewed by a medical team and, once approved, is connected to a local chapter. To date, the organization has positively impacted over 750 children, enlisted more than 1,200 volunteers, and operates over 165 local chapters.
“Launching this chapter of Project Fire Buddies within our District is a tremendous opportunity for us to extend beyond our firefighting and rescue work and reach into the lives of children who may be facing their toughest battle,” said Chief Robert DiLallo. “We believe that a friendly visit, a thoughtful gift, or simply spending time with a child who is ill can make a real difference. We’re honored to serve our community in this special way.”
We invite families, medical practitioners, schools, and community members to learn about the referral process or volunteer opportunities. Parents or guardians of a child with a critical illness can apply to become a “Fire Buddy” by completing the referral form on the Project Fire Buddies website. Support from the community is also welcome. Donations, one-time or monthly, make the mission possible and are fully tax-deductible via PFB’s 501(c)(3) status.
