Next month’s roster of activities at Riverdale Public Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:
Adult Programs
Knit and Stitch
1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, 16
A casual, self-guided group for knitting, crochet and other needle arts. Join in to share projects, ideas and techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring their own projects and tools. Basic materials and supplies are available for newcomers.
Book Discussion: “Whistler” by Ann Patchett
10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3
When Daphne Fuller and her husband Jonathan visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, they notice an older, white-haired gentleman following them. The man turns out to be Eddie Triplett, her former stepfather, who had been married to her mother for a little more than a year when Daphne was nine. Now fifty-three, Daphne hasn’t seen Eddie for many years, not since the fateful event that changed the direction of both their lives. Meeting again, time falls away; while their relationship was brief, it had a profound impact on them both and now that they are reunited, they have no intention of ever being separated again.
Ink Well: Writing Workshop
10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9
In this engaging two-hour workshop, participants will explore poetry and personal expression through guided writing exercises, thoughtful prompts, and creative discussion led by Poetess Nat. Designed for writers of all experience levels, this program encourages participants to slow down, reflect and connect with their own voice. Registration is required.
Miniature Curiosity Tins
2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12
Express your creativity in a pocket-size mint tin by decorating tiny shelves with books, plants and imagination. Supplies will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring tiny treasures or found objects from home to personalize their creation. Registration is required.
Chess
3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17
Enjoy chess at the library in a casual environment. Chessboards will be provided. People of all ages and skill levels are invited.
Dungeons & Dragons
2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19
Curious about Dungeons & Dragons? Join us for an afternoon of collaborative storytelling and strategy. From total beginners to veteran players, everyone is welcome to pull up a chair and join the party. Our guide for the journey, James E. Green III, will help navigate the rules and the monsters alike. Come for the game, stay for the community.
The Road to Revolution
10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24
This program chronicles the series of actions and counteractions by the British Empire and Americans, which led to the Declaration of Independence in 1776. At the onset of the French & Indian War in 1754, most American colonists were quite content and proud to be subjects of the British Empire. How then, in the span of just over a decade, did formerly loyal subjects become revolutionaries who sought to overthrow imperial rule and achieve a sovereign state?
Children’s Programs
Family Storytime
10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, 18, 25
For children through age 5 years with caregiver. Enjoy books, rhymes, songs and activities. This fun and engaging program offers kids a chance to make friends and build skills through stories, music and movement. Caregivers participate with their children while learning helpful early literacy strategies and tips to continue at home.

Enjoy chess at the library in a casual environment. Chessboards will be provided. People of all ages and skill levels are invited.
Read to Dogs
10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19
Join us at the library and read to dogs. These registered therapy animals volunteer with their owner/handler as a team to help kids practice reading. Participating children can read down their fines or just have fun reading to these furry friends. Bring your own book, find a favorite from the library collection or we can choose one for you.
Mario Kart Tournament
1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26
Get ready to partake in fun and friendly Mario Kart races, where you can show off your gaming skills and enjoy some friendly competition. Whether you’re a seasoned racer or a newcomer, this tournament is designed to be fun for all levels. This program is intended for kids ages 6-11 years.

Pop Culture Party
2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, 23
Join us for a laid-back teen hangout where we dive into what’s trending in pop culture – from viral moments and celebrity news to music, movies, books and trends. Come ready to share your thoughts, hear different perspectives, and stay in the loop while enjoying some good food and even better conversation.
