Next month’s roster of activities at Riverdale Public Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adult Programs

Knit and Stitch

1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, 19

A casual, self-guided group for knitting, crochet and other needle arts. Join in to share projects, ideas and techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring their own projects and tools. Basic materials and supplies are available for newcomers.

Book Discussion: “The Midnight Train” by Matt Haig

10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6

When your life flashes before your eyes, where would you stop? No one can change the past, but the Midnight Train can take you there. The chance to relive the moments that meant most. To see what kind of person you really were. For Wilbur his best days were with Maggie, the love of his life. On his honeymoon in Venice. Before he gave it all away. He wishes he could go back and live differently. But doing so risks everything.

Introduction to Watercolors

2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8

Join us for a no-stress, hands-on watercolor workshop. Learn basic techniques for painting with watercolors along with tips for selecting supplies and materials. Registration is required.

Buckingham Army Airfield

10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12

Take a historical look at Buckingham Army Airfield, a World War II aerial gunnery training base that transformed Lee County. Starting in 1942, Buckingham Army Airfield was home to some 16,000 men and women supporting the United States’ efforts in World War II.

Dungeons and Dragons

2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15

Join us for an afternoon of collaborative storytelling and strategy. From total beginners to veteran players, everyone is welcome to pull up a chair and join the party. Our guide for the journey, James E. Green III, will help navigate the rules and the monsters alike. Come for the game, stay for the community.

Children’s Programs

Family Storytime

10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7

For children through age 5 years with a caregiver. Enjoy books, rhymes, songs and activities. This fun and engaging program offers kids a chance to make friends and build skills through stories, music and movement. Caregivers participate with their children while learning helpful early literacy strategies and tips to continue at home.

Building Buddies

10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14

This program places a strong emphasis on social skill development, recognizing the importance of interpersonal relationships in early childhood education. Through collaborative block-building activities, children will learn to share, take turns and work together toward common goals, laying the foundation for positive social interactions.

Read to Dogs

10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15

Join us at the library and read to dogs. These registered therapy animals volunteer with their owner/handler as a team to help kids practice reading. Participating children can read down their fines or just have fun reading to these furry friends. Bring your own book, find a favorite from the library collection or we can choose one for you.

Play-Doh Playdate

10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21

Toddlers and preschoolers are invited to join us for a morning of squishy, Play-Doh fun. You will build early literacy skills through play and socialization. Registration is required and will open two weeks before the program.

Kid Creators: Dough Lab

1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22

This fun playdough program lets school-aged kids use their imagination to build colorful creations, take on silly challenges and explore hands-on play. It’s a great way to get creative, make new friends and have a totally dough-lightful time.

Puppet Playdate

10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28

Toddlers, preschool-age children and caregivers can explore the elements of early literacy using puppets. This program encourages imagination, vocabulary development and comprehension in a fun and engaging environment.

Teen Programs

Pop Culture Party

2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, 26

Join us for a laid-back teen hangout where we dive into what’s trending in pop culture, from viral moments and celebrity news to music, movies, books and trends. Come ready to share your thoughts, hear different perspectives and stay in the loop while enjoying some good food and even better conversation.
