Alliance for the Arts Presents Documentary Film Razing Liberty Square on Wednesday, April 17

The Alliance for the Arts is proud to present the thought-provoking documentary film “Razing Liberty Square” as part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. Taking place on Wednesday, April 17, at the Art House Cinema located at 10091 McGregor Blvd. in Fort Myers, this event promises to be an enlightening experience for all attendees.

The doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with the film scheduled to begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A session with the film’s Producer, Ronald Baez, moderated by WGCU’s Tara Calligan. This provides an opportunity for audience members to engage directly with the filmmaker and gain deeper insights into the issues explored in the documentary.

Ronald Baez, a Caribbean-American screenwriter, director, and award-winning immersive media artist hailing from Miami, FL, boasts an impressive portfolio of film projects. His latest endeavor, “Scenes from Our Young Marriage,” premiered at prestigious events like the Borscht and Miami Film Festivals, later earning distribution through PBS Broadcasting and Seed&Spark Online SVOD. Notably, Baez was honored with the Fledgling Fund’s Rapid Deployment Grant in 2018 for his documentary series “King Tide,” which sheds light on global warming and sea level rise in Miami. Recognized for his innovative contributions to immersive reality, Baez received the NAB Futures Innovator’s Award in 2019 for collaborative projects with the University of Florida’s MET Lab. Alongside his creative pursuits, he fulfills the role of Artistic Director at the After School Film Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to mentoring at-risk, inner-city students in South Florida.

“Razing Liberty Square” delves into the complex dynamics of a Miami neighborhood grappling with the consequences of climate gentrification. As residents of the historic Liberty Square public housing project confront a $300 million revitalization plan for their community, they become acutely aware that their neighborhood’s desirable location on high ground makes it vulnerable to exploitation.

Selected as part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, this screening underscores the Alliance for the Arts’ commitment to showcasing impactful stories and fostering dialogue around pressing social and environmental issues. By bringing independent filmmakers into conversation with diverse communities across the Southeast, this program seeks to amplify important voices and perspectives in filmmaking.

Get ready for an evening of cinematic exploration and meaningful discussion as we delve into the themes of community, resilience, and social justice. Be sure to mark your calendars for April 17th and secure your seat for this compelling screening of “Razing Liberty Square” at the Art House Cinema.
