East Lee/Lehigh Business Celebrates Community Commitment – 2021 Annual Award Gala Set For June 19th

By: Mike Welch

After a challenging year for our communities and for our area businesses, the region’s Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Award Gala on June 19th at the Plantation Golf & Country Club (a copy of the invitation is in this month’s paper issue on page 4).  As part of the celebration, we will honor our area’s teachers and some of our area’s public servants at the Fire District and at the Municipal Services District.  Please see the Chamber’s website at www.ELCCOC.org or call the Chamber Office at 239-369-3322 to reserve a seat.  (CDC Guidelines and Recommendations will be observed).

In today’s issue of Voices, our area’s Chamber of Commerce, the East Lee County Chamber of Commerce (formerly the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce) announces the honor or new additions to their governing team as Board Directors – Lee County Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass, the Honorable Burt Saunders and long-time community activist and businesswoman, Ruth Anglickis.  Please look at the Chamber’s announcement on these great folks as the Chamber moves forward to a “post pandemic” future.

WARNING FROM THE SHERIFF

The Lee County East District Command reports that vehicle burglary and vehicle theft is on the rise in our area.  This is not a new problem and often these crimes are preventable if we do our part.  Sheriff Marceno offers common sense advise and notes that these crimes are particularly increasing around the Leonard Blvd., east Gunnery Road as well as Homestead and Beth Stacy Road areas.  If you see these crimes in progress and need to report a crime, call the Sheriff’s Office at 239-477-1000.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE SPENCER ROACH

At this writing, the Florida Legislature is now its last week of the 2021 Regular Session in Tallahassee.  Our state representative, Spencer Roach offers us an article on the fight to save Florida’s legitimate Medical Marijuana Program from bad actors in 2015 the people of Florida voted for a safe and accessible medical program.  However, since the passing of this amendment abuses have now crept into this new program and Rep. Roach offers a bill to resolve some issues of abuse to head off an abuse crisis.  His column is thoughtful and insightful.
