Florida’s Sun Safety

By: Kelly Beall | Director Gulf Coast CDC

Each season as the Florida heat rises, everyone needs to be prepared. Many children and their families move to Florida for the beautiful sunny days, but without proper protection, the sun can cause damage in a variety of ways. Dehydration, heatstroke, sunburn, and skin cancer are just a few of those dangers, but fun in the sun can still be enjoyed just by taking a few simple precautions:

  • Drink plenty of water before, during, and after outdoor activities.
  • Apply sunscreen liberally before going outside and reapply as needed, especially after sweating and water activities.
  • Take frequent breaks in shaded areas, or plan to bring an umbrella or tarp to provide the shade you need.
  • Watch for signs of heatstroke. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse, dry or damp skin, and loss of consciousness. Call for emergency services if heatstroke is suspected.
  • Commit to routine skin screenings with your dermatologist.

By following these provisions, you can ensure that you and your family enjoy many safe and fun-filled days in the beautiful Florida sun.
