Let’s Play: Chess & More

3 p.m. Monday, March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31

Calling gaming enthusiasts of all ages. Join friends and friendly competitors alike for games of strategy, chance and fun. Bring your own game or choose from the library’s collection of chess sets, card games, board games, role playing games and more. Chess instruction is available the first Monday of each month from 3- 4 p.m.

English Café

East County Craft Club: Cricut Tumbler Craft

2 p.m. Saturday, March 8

This month the East County Craft Club will explore the world of vinyl cutting and application using Cricut machines. Crafters will receive group instruction on how to choose and create vinyl applications and then create and print a design for a tumbler. One-on-one help will be available. Registration is required. This program is intended for ages 18 and up. In person attendance closes 15 minutes into program.

Book Discussion: “The Women” by Kristin Hannah

3:30 p.m. Monday, March 10

“The Women” is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on the story of all women who put themselves in harm’s way to help others. Women whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has all too often been forgotten.

Knit and Stitch

5 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 26

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters that share projects, ideas and techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring their own projects and tools. Basic materials and supplies are available for newcomers.

Download Drop-In

11 a.m. Thursday, March 20

Receive personalized help downloading eBooks, eAudioBooks, movies, music and more from Libby/OverDrive and hoopla, two of Lee County Library System’s largest online content providers.

Support also will be available to registered users of the National Library Service’s Braille and Audio Reading Download service (BARD) which is provided through Home Borrower Services and Lee County Talking Books.

Note: Attendees should bring their preferred, charged device (tablet, phone, e-reader, etc.) along with any passwords needed to download apps. Kindle users also must have an Amazon account and password. Patrons interested in BARD should contact Talking Books at 239-533-4780 before attending to ensure they have an active account or find out how to set one up.

Introduction to the World of Wine

2 p.m. Wednesday, March 22

Join us for a presentation by Jerry Greenfield, local writer and wine educator. Learn about the world of wine tasting and get introduced to the subtleties and intricacies of wine. No wine will be served at this program.

Know Diabetes by Heart

11 a.m. Thursday, March 27

Know Diabetes by Heart is a presentation that engages communities and motivates people to create an enduring culture of health where the healthy choice is the easy choice. Understand what diabetes is and its link to heart disease and stroke. Empower people living with type 2 diabetes to take charge of their health to reduce their risk. Presented by the American Health Association. Registration is required.

Build-It: Roller Coasters

4 p.m. Tuesday, March 4

Use your imagination to build. Create a roller coaster using our engineering toys like Brain Flakes, Lego and more. and we’ll put your 3D design on display for viewing. This program is intended for children ages 5-11 years. Can’t make it? Stop by Youth Services and build with our materials anytime. We’ll add your creation to our display.

Kids Read Down Fines

3 – 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 12, 19, 26

11 a.m. – Noon Saturday, March 8

Children and teens can earn a $2 credit on overdue fines for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Please bring your library card.

Read to Dogs

11 a.m. Saturday, March 8

Practice your literacy skills with a furry friend. Children ages 6-11 years are invited to select a book to read aloud and then join our registered therapy dog and their owner/handler on the storytime carpet for gentle pets and stories. Children can use this time to read down fines or develop a love of reading in a relaxed atmosphere.

Bubble Dance Party

6 p.m. Monday, March 10

Families with children through age 5 years are invited to dance, sing and play with bubbles. Dress up is always encouraged but not required.

Pi Day Celebration

4 p.m. Tuesday, March 11

Celebrate Pi Day by learning to calculate Pi with delicious mini pies. Once you’ve calculated the circumference, area and volume of your pie you can eat it as a reward for a job well done. We’ll even make a pie chart based on everyone’s favorite pie to determine which flavor reigns supreme. For grades K-5.

A Very Eric Carle Celebration

10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 12

Giggle, smile and play at our Eric Carle-themed celebration. Kids ages 2-5 years are invited to drop in with their grown-up for fun activities and crafts including a toddler friendly “Very Hungry Caterpillar” obstacle course and a personalized “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” craft. No registration required, while supplies last.

Puppets & Pop-Up Books

6 p.m. Monday, March 17

Discover the joy of three-dimensional reading. After listening to a story read aloud, families can browse our collection of puppets and pop-up books and read with their children. Open to children through age 5 years.

Spring Break Race Day

1 p.m. Tuesday, March 18

Who can build the fastest car? Use your skills and creativity to build, test and race your car against friends to find out. While you wait for your turn to race, play a round or two of Mario Kart with the other kids. For grades K-5.

Sensory Playdate: Color

10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19

There’s a rainbow of fun waiting at the library. We’ll have an assortment of colorful sensory toys, activities and music available to encourage a fun bonding experience for families and for children to make new friends. Our Sensory Playdate helps to promote both social and motor skills as well as build early literacy skills. For ages 2-5 years.

Preschool Storytime

10:30 a.m. Monday, March 24, 31

For ages 3 – 5 years. Preschoolers learn through reading, singing and playing. Children attend this program independently while parents and caregivers wait nearby.

Family Storytime

6 p.m. Monday, March 24, 31

10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 26

For children through age 5 years and caregivers. Families with young children enjoy a variety of stories, songs, rhymes and movement.

Family Storytime (Babies & Toddlers)

10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 25

For babies and children through age 36 months with caregivers. Wiggle and giggle with your littles during this interactive storytime that uses stories, music, movement, and rhymes to support early literacy skills. Each program offers literacy tips and strategies for parents that encourage language skills and stimulate brain development, setting the foundation for reading success.

Library Teen Talk

2 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 12, 26

High school teens are invited to the library for a weekly discussion about current events, everyday life, library resources and more. Teens will be encouraged to post an answer to a weekly question while socializing and making new friends.

Create your own original artwork using a variety of buttons and make your own pin-on button. Supplies will be provided. This program is open to teens ages 12-18 years.

Teen Thursday: High School Karaoke

2 p.m. Thursday, March 13

Flex your skills in a friendly competition against fellow teens to determine who will bring down the house. Sing solo or with friends to win ultimate bragging rights. Sign-ups are taken in the first 10 minutes and participants will perform in the order they register. Open to teens aged 12-18 years.

Middle School Game Day

4 p.m. Tuesday, March 25

Game on, middle schoolers. We’ll have a selection of board games, video games, card games and more to play at the library. Challenge each other to friendly competitions or relax and catch up over a game of your choosing. You can also bring your own games to play and food and covered drinks to enjoy. This event is open to middle school-aged kids in grades 6-8.
