Lee County Domestic Animal Services will expand its ‘Check the Chip’ program to include partnering agencies across Lee County starting May 1. The pilot agency will be the North Fort Myers Fire District, 2900 Trail Dairy Circle in North Fort Myers.

Residents will be able to take found pets to the fire station seven days a week 7 a.m.- 7 p.m. to be scanned for a microchip. Staff will be given universal scanners and trained by Animal Services. Stray animals will be able to be left with the fire department for Animal Services or the owner to pick up.

A microchip ID is a small computer chip, about the size of a grain of rice. It is implanted under the animal’s skin, between the shoulder blades. Unlike other forms of identification, a microchip ID cannot be removed or lost. Pets may slip out of their collars or lose tags. With a microchip ID, a pet will have a much greater chance of being returned to its owner if it is lost.
