The Lee Board of County Commissioners continued its commitment to the roadways and pedestrian pathways in Lehigh Acres on Tuesday, voting to award a contract to build a concrete sidewalk at Lehigh Elementary School using a federal grant.
The $216,096 contract with Fort Myers-based V & H Construction, Inc. is funded by the Federal Highway Administration’s Local Agency Program grant program, Safe Routes to School. Funding for this project was approved through a Local Agency Program Agreement on Oct.15, 2024. Construction is expected to begin in July and be complete by October, weather permitting.
This project is intended to improve the walking conditions of students and residents in the area of the Lehigh Elementary School, 200 Schoolside Drive. Work will include a new 5-foot-wide sidewalk along Schoolside Drive from East 3rd Street to Richmond Avenue North and Schoolside Court from Schoolside Drive to East 3rd Street, as well as handrail installation, minor drainage improvements, sign relocation and detectable warning surfaces.
