The last few weeks have been really bad ones for many people here in Southwest Florida as well as in  some of our other southern states.  The weather is definitely giving us many rough times and unfortunately, because of climate change, there isn’t that much we can do about it unless we all work together to begin to dispel some of our carbon print.

Here at the VFW Post 4174, we are collecting items to be sent to the Posts which were hit.  In Lehigh Acres, we were really lucky because many parts of our area never lost power, while those that did, had it back on fairly quickly. We also were very lucky because there was so little rain.  Because we’re not too close to any water, other than our canals, we don’t have to cope with storm surge which is so horrible.

But, with the resilience of our people, we are forging ahead with our normal plans to keep things going the way they are supposed to be moving.  We will have our Trunk or Treat and are still accepting candy, our usual good meals are being prepared, the lunches are Monday through Friday and we are having an Octoberfest party this Saturday. You don’t have to wear the lederhosen to attend!  If you want any information on our events, call us at 239-369-5100, or stop in and check our huge wall calendar of events.  There’s always something happening here!

Our bowling games are becoming more popular every week,  we have cards along with our Bingo games which are played on Saturdays at noon, and are also adding board games for everyone’s enjoyment. Gather a few of your friends and find a table, go through the box to find your favorite game and get ready for an afternoon or evening of the type of fun you enjoyed as a teen!    Of course, football is on all the tv’s each Saturday and Sunday for those of you who like watching and yelling for your favorite team.

October 30th, put on your favorite costume and join us for a great Halloween party and pot luck dinner.  Halloween is always a good time to drag out some of those old clothes that have been hanging in our closets for ages and being made into some sort of get up.  After all, didn’t everyone want to be a gypsy or a pirate at some time in their life? And don’t you think it’s time to get rid of the tie died t shirts you wore for ages and ages?   It’s also a good way to clean out a closet!

Our VFW Post 4174 is the Little Post with the Big Heart.  If you come in and join us for any of our activities or become a member if eligible, you will find out exactly why we are called and considered such!  We are also non smoking now, so if you were hesitant before about coming in, you no longer have to worry!

Yes, there have been some really terrible times lately, but our Post, located at 25 S. Homestead Road is trying to make the best of things and will be glad to welcome anyone interested in joining us.  Even if it’s just for a lunch or dinner, you will have a good time and, you’ll be glad you did!
