Veterans Club of America Post #1 meets a Gold Star Mother

Gold Star Mother

By: Robin Perkins Matthews

At a recent general meeting, we had a special guest visit to explain her story and mission. Beth is a resident of Fort Myers Florida. She is also a member of the SWFL American Gold Star Mothers Inc., which started back in 1928 as a non-profitable and non-political organization composed of women who had lost a son or daughter in WWI. Beth lost her son recently and her goal is to have a wreath placed on every headstone of a Veteran son or daughter in Lee County.

After hearing her story and actually realizing that we had active members of our post who knew her son, our hearts were pulled with so much pride and love that in one night we raised enough money to get over half of the headstones in this county decorated with wreaths. A lot of tears were shed that night but hearts grew enormously. The Veterans Club of America has always been working towards helping our community in various ways throughout its history since the ’80s and this was just one more way of showing our love to country and county!
