YOU ‘HADDA’ BE THERE!

By: Pat Whitehall

If ever the word “labor” was taken seriously, it “hadda” be Saturday, August 31st at the VFW Post 4174 in Lehigh Acres.  We had many different people laboring to put together a rib cook off, complete with contests, laughter and a fantastic duo playing a great mixture of music.  They all worked so well together it was a fantastic time!

Coming down Homestead Road, you could smell the heavenly aroma of ribs being barbecued, and let me tell you, they were so succulent and fell off the bones.  Since ribs are my second favorite meal in the whole wide world, I couldn’t wait til they were served, and when they came, the plate was so full of food, I thought I’d have to get a huge doggy bag to take everything home.  There was potato salad, baked beans, corn on the cob and of course, the meat.  And let’s not forget the desserts.

The potato salad contest was great and I would be more than happy to get the recipes for them.  We also had teams bowling for trophies and a cash prize.  Those not bowling were hollering for their friends to pick up the splits or applauding the strikes and spares.  There was also a cartwheel contest!  Now, in my youth, I had always been courageous enough to try any athletics, was very good at walking on my hands, but any more, I have to pass on such activities.  See, I happen to like my bones just where they are, thank you very much!

We had a duo called A Lil Mixed Up playing so many good songs for us and they definitely have voices you want to listen to all evening.  Everyone listening to them had feet tapping, shoulders swaying and singing along to so many favorite oldies.  They are definitely a duo to come out and listen to anytime.

The whole day was a perfect ending for the summer season, even though summer lasts most of the year here in Southwest Florida.  Our Post may be small, but we are known as the Little Post with the Big Heart and our doors are always open to the public.  We have also become a non-smoking post, so many of the people who didn’t want to join us before should make a trip to see what we’re all about.

There’s always something happening all the time at 25 S. Homestead Road, and we are planning on many more events for the rest of the year.  Stop in to see what’s going on or give us a call at 239-369-5100.  You’ll be glad you did!
