Next month’s roster of activities at Riverdale Public Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:
Adult Programs
Knit and Stitch
1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 18
A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters that join together to share projects, ideas and techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring their own projects and tools. Basic materials and supplies are available for newcomers.
Book Discussion: “James” by Percival Everett
10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5
A retelling of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” from the enslaved Jim’s point of view.
Curiosity Connection: Maker Technology
10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11
This month, we’ll explore consumer maker technology for DIY projects and creative expression through discussion and live demonstration of maker tech. Curiosity Connection offers adults in our community the opportunity to explore a new subject each month in arts, culture, science, and technology by combining interactive presentations and hands-on experiences with open and engaging discussions. Participants will have the opportunity to shape future programs by providing monthly subject suggestions.
SWFL Growing with The Seasons

Learn tips for growing vibrant gardens and delicious vegetables year-round in Southwest Florida with ECHO’s Informational Resourcing Associate, Stacy Swartz.
BARD Drop-In Session
10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18
Registered users of BARD, the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download service available to Talking Book users, can get personalized assistance and learn how to access books, magazines, and music materials in audio and electronic braille. Join us for expert guidance on utilizing BARD or BARD Express. Bring your fully charged devices for a hands-on help session.

Cuba: 500 Years of History
2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19
Cuba and the U.S. have had an intimate relationship for long periods of time and the island holds a special place in the minds of many in the U.S. This lecture will retrace the history of the island, from its discovery in 1492 to the most recent developments. Upon completion, you will have a good grasp of the factors, events and people that have shaped Cuban history and the intricate Cuba-U.S. relationship.
Aging and the Eye
10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25
This lecture will focus on two major ocular conditions commonly associated with aging: cataracts and age-related macular degeneration and will discuss their causes and available therapies. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the program.
Hands on with Cricut Joy
10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28
Create a personalized tumbler in this beginner-friendly introduction to the Cricut Joy and Design Space. All materials supplied. Registration is required.
Children’s Programs
Family Storytime
10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 13
For children through age five years and caregivers. Families with young children enjoy a variety of stories, songs, rhymes and movement.
Baby Rhyme Time
10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20
For babies up to 18 months. Babies and caregivers wiggle and giggle in a supportive environment. Space is limited.
Food STEM
11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21
Does your child love food and enjoy hands-on experiments? Our Food STEM program is designed children ages 6-12 years and blends the excitement of food with the wonder of science. Registration is required and space is limited. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
Homeschool Hangout: Paper Bag Puppets
1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24
Join us for a fun and creative hangout where elementary children ages 6-12 years can unleash their imagination and craft their very own paper bag puppets. This hands-on activity encourages creativity, fine motor skills and storytelling as each participant designs and constructs their unique puppet character. Supplies will be provided by the library.
Bilingual Family Storytime
10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27
For children through age 5 years and caregivers. This fun and engaging storytime for children and caregivers promotes and reinforces early literacy skills and language development. Stories, music, movement and activities are shared in both English and Spanish. English or Spanish language skills are not necessary to participate in this program.
Teen Programs
Anime Hour
2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17
Enjoy an hour of anime entertainment, creative expression and lively discussions. This program is specially curated for anime enthusiasts to indulge in their passion for Japanese animation while hanging out among like-minded peers. Snacks provided and cosplay encouraged. This program is for teens ages 12-18 years.
