It’s so hard to believe just a few short weeks ago, schools let out for the summer, many of our members went north for cooler climes and yet in 3 more weeks, schools will be starting up again.  Where has the time gone?  It appears to rush past faster and faster every year!

Here at the VFW Post 4174 in Lehigh Acres, we have been very busy and trying to get things accomplished in the fastest time, before our northern friends return!  As of August 1st, our house will become a smoke free zone.  We have had a section in the front of our building set up for those who would like to have a cigarette.  They will be outside in a shaded, screened enclosure.  There is an entrance in the back of the building for those entering and not wanting to come in contact with any smoke.  Parking is also mainly in the back lot.

To prove we are the Little Post with the Big Heart, we have already set up the boxes for school supplies which will be donated to 3 schools here in Lehigh Acres.  There is a long list of the items the students will be needing on the front of the box, and we are asking everyone to take a few dollars and purchase some of these necessary supplies.  Many stores are having sales on paper, composition books, pens, rulers, pencils, markers, crayons and so many other school necessities.  In case one doesn’t want to shop, monetary donations will be accepted.

Our floors are being professionally cleaned and  there will not be a lunch for Thursday the 25th, seeing as how the floors will have to be completely dried before we can use the kitchen again and all the tables and chairs have to be put back in place.  We are looking to make a few improvements in the kitchen area in the very near future, but will keep you informed as they come up.

With an older building, there is always a need for work to be done, items to be upgraded, building codes to be reworked and other repairs thanks to the wear and tear we experience due to the weather we experience here in southwest Florida.  Since our building was put up in 1967, it has seen many changes.

In spite of all the extra activity going on, we are continuing with our normal calendar.  Monday is still the Show Me the Money, Tuesdays our meetings with the exception of the DAV, Wednesday dinners with entertainment, Thursdays regular Bingo, Fridays a different meal each week and entertainment, the 2nd and fourth Saturdays is the famous Hillbilly Bingo and Sundays beginning at 8:30 is our great breakfast.

If you have any questions about any of our events, call 239-369-5100 or stop in to visit and get acquainted with our many members.  You’ll be glad you did!
